A Guide to Caring for your Driveway
The following are in no particular order but
should all be paid attention to:
*Grass - You won't think a tiny blade of grass
could harm your asphalt but if left untreated it will spread and spread
causing cracking and eventually ruining your new drive. At the first signs of
grass coming up through the asphalt you need to use Round Up or a similar
product that will kill the root of it. DON'T JUST USE THE WEED EATER TO CUT
IT OFF.
*Oils - If you have a car that leaks you should
pay close attention to the spots it leaves behind, oil penetrates deep into
the asphalt and is like an iceberg what you see on the surface is only about
1/3 of what is underneath [ this applies to oil spots that have gone untreated
for a long period of time usually over the course of several years].
If you notice any leaks place a piece of plywood
underneath the leak it will save your asphalt from deteriorating. To
treat spots use Dawn liquid dish detergent apply directly use a scrub brush
let stand then rinse away.
*Sand and Dirt - At least 2 times a year you
should hose off the drive to remove sand and dirt. Sand will act as an
abrasive when your cars go over it and will slowly eat away the asphalt.
*Tree roots - Sometimes there is nothing to do but
have the tree removed, other times you can cut just the one root to stop
damage from occurring. I recommend having a certified arborist come out and
evaluate your particular situation.
*Sealcoating - THE BEST DEFENSE AGAINST THE
ELEMENTS. A professionally sealed drive will increase the life of your drive
by 2-3 times that of an untreated drive. Sealcoating is designed to repel
oils and other harmful effects such as weather damage and wear from sand &
dirt. The sealed surface also makes your driveway almost effortless to keep
clean.
